Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has said that his side's performance against Altrincham surprised him, with the Hampshire side just edging their non-league opponents 2-1 at Fratton Park last Saturday.

Pompey were heading for a replay against their National League North opposition until Brett Pitman broke Altrincham hearts with a winner for the hosts in stoppage time, which ensured that Portsmouth were in the hat for tonight's third round FA Cup draw.

Speaking to BBC Journalist Andrew Moon ahead of his side's second round Leasing.com trophy clash against Northampton Town tomorrow evening, Jackett admitted that he was 'surprised' at his side's performance against Altrincham.

In a tweet, Moon stated that Jackett felt Pompey were "well set up to back up Tuesday's win [against Rotherham]."

As seen above, Jackett then went on to say that he was pleased with his side's ability to win despite being on the back foot after Altrincham's equaliser in the 83rd minute of the FA Cup tie.

The sixth-tier side were more than a match for Pompey on the day, making it an even game in terms of possession of the ball, as well as attempting ten shots on goal.

It is the second consecutive non-league side that Pompey have faced in this year's FA Cup, as they came up against 5th tier Harrogate Town in the first round of the competition in mid-November.

The Verdict

It is an honest assessment from Kenny Jackett on the display from his side against Altrincham on Saturday, as he is clearly surprised at how Portsmouth didn't carry the momentum from the win against Rotherham in League One into the cup tie.

The fighting spirit shown to snatch the win from Altrincham's grasp at the death highlights the side's strong character, and they will be looking to take that positive into their upcoming games against Northampton Town and Peterborough United.
