Kenny Jackett delivers Portsmouth contract update

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has revealed there are no plans to tie his out of contract players to new deals right now, as reported by the Portsmouth News.

Exciting Irish international Ronan Curtis heads the list of players that don’t have a deal beyond the summer, with Brett Pitman, Oli Hawkins, Luke McGee, Christian Burgess, Lee Brown, Brandon Haunstrup, Adam May, Anton Walkes and Matt Casey also all due to see their contracts expire.

Despite that, a tough start to the season means Jackett is concentrating on football matters at the moment.

“I don’t think it’s contract time at the moment,” said the former Wolves boss, who has seen his side win just once in the league this season.

“For the next few months, it’s going to be trying to get some results, with the group settling down and concentrating on football. If there are any outstanding contracts we feel need to be looked at then yes, we will react, we do see that.”

The likes of Curtis and Lee Brown are established first team members, but despite the worry of losing them for nothing, Jackett isn’t going to dilute the club’s focus right now, especially with a year’s option on one of the deals.

“This is a period where we try to win as many games as possible and concentrate on that. From the club’s point of view, I don’t think there will be a review of the contracts now. Curtis is definitely an asset and we have been pleased with him. His contractual situation is this season and a year’s option.”

Pompey have another free weekend this Saturday as they were scheduled to play Bury, a week after having a matchday off courtesy of the international break.

The Verdict

This is a dangerous game for a club with an asset like Curtis. Some of the players on the list will be waiting for the call, hoping they get a new deal.

Ronan Curtis could probably have his pick of Championship clubs if he became a free agent. That must surely be of concern, even with the year’s option.

I’m always suspicious of ‘options’, it’s a very non-committal word that doesn’t let fans know how watertight their star player’s deal is. Pompey fans are not a happy bunch right now anyway, without another situation to cause them concern.
