Kenny Jackett has admitted new signings are not close for League One leaders Portsmouth as their current slump continues, as reported by the Portsmouth News.

Their lead at the top has been cut to just one point, with a resurgent Luton Town coming from nowhere to challenge for the top spot.

Pompey have lost two league matches in a row, with three of their last five League One clashes ending up in defeat.

That has allowed the Hatters to catch up, whilst a stumbling Sunderland have failed to press home the advantage. If fans are hoping for new recruits to inject some life into the automatic promotion bid, they're set to be disappointed as Jackett revealed he's not close to bringing in any new faces.

Speaking after losing 2-1 to Oxford this weekend, Jackett said; "There is nothing at the moment, we aren’t in a situation where anybody is necessarily close, although we are always trying and looking to strengthen. If we can, we will."

Pompey have lost three loan players this January already, Joe Mason, Ben Thompson and Andre Green. They have managed to bring in two new players, Andy Cannon from Rochdale and Bryn Morris from struggling Shrewsbury.

They're without a league game now until next Tuesday night, when they make the trip to Kenilworth Road to face second placed Luton.

The Verdict

Portmsouth need something to kick start their promotion push. They've not lost their way as such, but other sides have figured them out. At the weekend they looked woeful against Oxford, although the home side have raised their game in recent weeks.

Fans will be disappointed to hear nobody new is coming in right now, but they needn't be. There's lots of time left in the window as yet and if Jackett can move, he will.
