Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Kenny Jackett has heaped praise on striker Benik Afobe for dealing with the intense Premier League interest that was generated during the transfer window.

Benik Afobe remained a Wolves player after the transfer deadline passed on Tuesday

The Sky Bet Championship side turned down numerous offers, believed to be around £10 million, for the former Arsenal man from a host of Premier League clubs, including Norwich City.

But the 22-year-old remains at Molineux, much to the delight of manager Jackett, who stated: 'He has been very professional, I have got a lot of sympathy for him, it is a very difficult situation.

'We have been honest with him and we have told him every time there has been a bid, but it has been a difficult time for him. We understand that, because you are always thinking what is the best thing for my future, my family.'

The praise came after Nouha Dicko, who partnered Afobe for the second half of last season, was ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in their 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic last weekend.

Wolves were linked with a late deadline day move for Reading hitman Nick Blackman, who is currently enjoying a rich vein of form which sees him second on the league's top scorer list, but the move never went ahead.

This leaves the scoring responsibilities largely with Afobe, who will be without not just Dicko but also midfielder Bakary Sako, who moved on a free transfer to Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer.

The three of them provided a host of goals and assists last season, and were a major reason for Wolves' seventh place finish. The question remains as to whether Afobe can continue to produce the goods in a side now lacking in creativity.

Wolves, currently 12th in the Championship, travel to Bolton Wanderers next weekend.
