Former Nottingham Forest star Kenny Burns has insisted that Derby County will last just one season in the Premier League, should they win promotion against Aston Villa at Wembley.

The Rams took a giant step towards promotion to the top-flight last week, defying the odds by defeating Leeds United at Elland Road.

Frank Lampard's men had trailed 2-0 on aggregate at one stage in the night, but goals from Jack Marriott, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson completed a remarkable turnaround for the Rams.

Now, Lampard's side will face Aston Villa at Wembley on the 27th of May, as both sides look to join Norwich City and Sheffield United in the Premier League next season.

Speaking in his latest Nottingham Post column, Burns congratulated Derby for their enthralling win over Leeds in midweek, but insisted that Forest's bitter rivals will come straight back down into the Championship even if they do go up this term.

He said: "Let’s get it right, if Derby County get promoted to the Premier League, they’ll last three seasons. Autumn, winter and spring. That’ll be it.

"Credit to them for beating Leeds on Wednesday night, and it was a game that Nottingham Forest fans would have hated."

Forest, meanwhile, saw their race for the play-offs deterioarate in early April, when four straight league defeats under Martin O'Neill meant that the Reds slipped well away from the top six.

They finished the season sitting 9th in the Sky Bet Championship table, eight points off Derby.

The Verdict

Burns just loves to dig at Derby, doesn't he!

I have to disagree with what he's saying here - I think that if Derby go up this season, then they have a greater chance of re-signing the likes of Mount and Wilson, and they will be fantastic in the Premier League.

I think Burns needs to focus on Forest's problems, before slamming another club.
