Kemar Roofe has said it was simple to make the transition from a winger to a number nine this season with the help of Marcelo Bielsa.

The striker has has 14 goals in his 27 appearances this season and was a regular for the promotion-chasing side before he suffered a ligament injury against Swansea last month.

But Leeds are hoping Roofe will feature in the final run-in after functioning so effectively in Bielsa's high-energy system for much of the season.

While he had not scored in five games before his injury, his link-up play and movement was an asset to Bielsa's side who have now lost twice in six games during his absence.

Their most recent defeat came against promotion rivals Sheffield United on Saturday with Leeds missing the abilities and squad depth that Roofe contributes in attack, especially since his switch to number nine.

Roofe has lifted the lids on this tactical switch and said he found it easy to make the role transition because of Bielsa's in-depth training methods.

"I think it was easy," he told EFL on Quest. "Just because we worked so hard in training and in pre-season. He wanted to get us in two weeks sooner, just to work on everything he wanted.

"It's not just football it is education as well."

The fact Roofe relates his positional switch to education as well as functionality demonstrates his relentless desire to improve.

This kind of character trait is valued highly by Bielsa and reveals why Roofe has proved to be such a good fit in the Leeds side this season.

The verdict

Roofe has thrived in a more central role and his return will provide a massive boost to Leeds' promotion hopes.

He has clearly absorbed Bielsa's guidance throughout the season, which means he is now a key member of the squad.

His comeback will give Leeds the depth in quality they need to navigate their way back into the automatic promotion spots.
