Kemar Roofe has admitted that in an ‘ideal world’ he would’ve stayed with Leeds United to play in the Premier League.

Leeds lost Roofe back in the summer, with the club’s top goalscorer from the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns moving to Anderlecht as his contract at Elland Road ran down.

Yet, in a recent interview with FourFourTwo, Roofe has admitted that in an ideal world he would’ve stuck around at Elland Road and played for Leeds in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old stated: “The ideal world would have been getting promoted at Leeds and staying there in the Premier League, but it wasn’t to be.”

Roofe struck 14 goals last season in the regular season, helping Marcelo Bielsa’s side into automatic promotion contention. However, they fell short in that race and despite Roofe scoring one more goal in the play-off semi-final against Derby County, the Whites failed to reach Wembley following a thrilling second-leg with the Rams.

Despite the departure of Roofe, Leeds were back for more and top the Championship with nine games remaining. For Roofe, he hopes to see his former team promoted.

He continued: “It might still happen for them – it would be amazing.”

The Verdict

Roofe’s departure was one of the big regrets on the back of last season’s failed promotion push, which means this admission might be hard to take for some.

He clearly loved the club and wanted to stay in the Premier League, but football is a short career and he made a move for his greater good, which is fair enough.

The fact he talks so passionately about the club and his time there, tells you he means it when he says he hopes to see Leeds promoted.
