Bolton Wanderers are struggling in their bid to survive in League One, but it hasn't been all 'doom and gloom' for the club's supporters this season.

One young player that has been a rare bright spark for Bolton this season is Ronan Darcy, who has made 20 appearances for the first team this term.

His strong performances certainly haven't gone unnoticed either, as Football Insider have previously revealed that both Rangers and Celtic are interested in striking a deal for the youngster.

Speaking in an interview with The Bolton News, Trotters boss Keith Hill revealed that he is keen to tie Darcy down to a new deal with the club in the near future.

"He is fully inclusive and I want to sign him, I see him as a real star of the future but it’s important he ties it up with this football club like Dennis did.

"We will know more after 18 games but someone like Ryan Delaney, bringing him in on an 18-month deal makes sense to me, Dennis Politic is signed up and hopefully Ronan Darcy will follow."

Hill went on to reveal that he is keen to tie down key players to longer deals in the near future, and stated that he is looking for his side to challenge for promotion next season, regardless of what division they're playing their football in.

"Will think there are players here that we want to carry on through because whatever league we’re playing in we’ll be looking for promotion.

"It’s a good start. Talking with Peter Kenyon, February 1 was the start of the next phase and that means building continuity and a squad for next season."

Bolton are next in action on Saturday when they take on high-flying Coventry City in what is certain to be a tricky test for Keith Hill's side as they look to pull of an unlikely survival bid in League One.

The Verdict:

This is definitely the right call.

Darcy has been one of the young players that have shown they can make the step up to the Bolton senior side this season, and I wasn't surprised to hear that other clubs were interested in landing his signature.

Bolton have recently announced that Dennis Politic has signed a new deal with the club, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Darcy commit his future to the Trotters for the foreseeable future.

If he can build on his performances from this year's campaign, then you have to imagine that he'll have a significant role to play in the Bolton squad for seasons to come.
