The Republic of Ireland international, capped 16 times by his country, was released by Premier League side Sunderland at the end of last season, ending a three-year stay in Tyneside that yielded only 24 appearances.

Westwood, 29, was one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in the Football League when he broke onto the scene with Carlisle United a decade ago and was named in the League One team of the season for the 2007/08, which played a part in his move to Coventry City in the summer of 2008.

After being named in the Championship team of the season in his debut year with the Sky Blues, the goalkeeper’s game went from strength-to-strength and he moved to the Premier League side in the summer of 2011 but failed to nail down a regular first-team berth at the Stadium of Light because of the form of Simon Mignolet and then Vito Mannone.
