Sheffield Wednesday keeper Keiren Westwood has revealed that the play-off semi-final win over Brighton back in 2016 was a special time for the club.

The Owls have struggled in the Championship this season but they had pushed for promotion over the past few years.

And, the closest they came was back in 2016 when Carlos Carvalhal's side reached the play-off final, only to lose to Hull City at Wembley.

Whilst that was a forgettable afternoon, the win over the Seagulls is one that will live long in the memory for the fans and the club shared a clip of Kieran Lee's goal on their official Twitter account yesterday.

That prompted a response from Westwood, who explained why it was such a great night.

"Typical @kieranlee1988 finish. Doesn’t miss them... atmosphere was unreal, stadium was rocking. These two games against Brighton in the playoffs were special."

The Irish international was a key player during that time for Wednesday, with his performances in goal crucial to the Owls success.

However, he has controversially fallen out of favour since and hasn't played for the club since late November.

The verdict

The Brighton game was a great night for Wednesday as there was a big crowd at Hillsborough and a real belief that they could finally end their stay outside the Premier League.

It has clearly left an impression on Westwood and that's saying something when you consider how long he has been at the club and some of the games he has been involved in.

Unfortunately, nights like that and competing to win promotion will feel a long way away right now for the fans.
