Sheffield United kept up their charge for an automatic promotion place with a slender victory over Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.

Chris Wilder knew his men were in for a battle against the side with the best defence in the division and prevailed by the odd goal thanks to a second-half Richard Stearman header.

The home team dominated the ball against a resolute and hard-to-break-down Boro outfit who also have prospects of promotion.

But their task to overcome the deficit took a hit three minutes after the goal when Daniel Ayala was shown a red card to stack the odds against Tony Pulis’ team.

The Blades were unable to add to their goal tally with the man advantage in a game that offered little in terms of fluidity and attacking football.

United are now just two points off Norwich after the win at Bramall Lane coincided with the Canaries’ 3-1 defeat at Preston.

Leeds are one point further ahead of Wilder’s men with 14 games left to play.

It was an important night for Sheffield United, and they came through the test against their promotion rivals with flying colours having thrown away a three-goal lead to draw against Villa last time out.

With that said, here’s how their fans reacted on Twitter after the game.
