Despite Middlesbrough missing out on a chance to play in the play-off final after their 1-0 aggregate defeat to Aston Villa, Tony Pulis’ side do have positives to take from the loss.

While the pace and trickery of Spanish forward Adama Traore grabbed the headlines, the work of George Friend went under the radar, much like it has done all season.

The 30-year-old defender has made 39 appearances for Boro this season and was one of the pivotal reasons why they ended the season in fifth place in the Championship table.

While Friend isn’t the most technically gifted player in the league, his work rate and commitment is second to none, and after missing out on the chance to make it back to the Premier League, potential suitors may have the Englishman on their radar.

Friend was a bargain buy under then manager Tony Mowbray back in 2012, and has since become somewhat of a fan favourite in his 214 games for the club, but some are suggesting it is time to say goodbye to their veteran full-back.

His unconventional runs down the flanks and ability to intercept the ball will be hard to match for Tony Pulis, which is why it is vital they keep the Englishman at the Riverside for a few more years.

George Friend has two years left on his contract, meaning that he will be at the club until 2020, unless another side comes in for him, which is entirely possible after his impressive campaign.

The defender, despite ending up on the losing side in Saturday’s play-off semi-final defeat to Steve Bruce’s side, showed his worth with a crucial goal mouth bloke to deny the Villans a certain goal.

The acquisition of Friend at any club would be one met with open arms, as he can provide experience and talent. He may not be a big name signing, but he could boost any low-end Premier League side.

Tony Pulis is bound to have a slight overhaul of players during this summer’s transfer window to ready his side for another battle in the Championship next season but should hold off on getting rid of George Friend, if Boro are to push for promotion next season.
