Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame has encourage his teammates to continue fighting in their bid for promotion from the Sky Bet Championship, reports the Chronicle Live.

Diame replaced Jonjo Shelvey in a deeper midfield role for the Magpies on Saturday, as Rafa Benitez’s side were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.

Saturday’s result saw Benitez’s side maintain their place at the top of the Championship table, gaining a point advantage over Brighton and Hove Albion, after the Seagulls were defeated 2-0 by Leeds United.

Despite the disappointment of dropping two-points on Saturday, Diame looked at the positives from the Magpies’ stalemate with Birmingham, he said: “We just need to keep fighting until the end. It was difficult (at Birmingham).

“We wanted to win but we drew so we just need to think about the next one now. It’s going to be tough but we just need to keep working.”

There are just eight fixtures of the Championship season remaining, with the run-in beginning after this week’s international break, and Benitez’s side are not far away from securing automatic promotion, as they currently hold a seven-point cushion over third placed Huddersfield Town.

Benitez’s side return to league action on April 1st against Wigan Athletic, before facing Burton Albion four days later, where the Magpies will be looking to continue their promotion push against two of the Championship’s struggling sides.
