The faith that McKenna has shown in the physical forward, who was heading towards the expiry of his contract this summer, would suggest that he may even be first choice, when fit, ahead of Tyreece John-Jules, Joe Pigott and Freddie Ladapo at Portman Road this season.

The Tractor Boys are currently second favourites, behind Sheffield Wednesday, for the League One title this season, and having had a fairly modest career in terms of the stature of the clubs he has played for, this could well be the most memorable campaign of Jackson's playing days if things go to plan under McKenna.

The Verdict

Jackson only started seven league outings last season, but left a lasting impression on the manager, as a key cog in the Tractor Boys' resurgence, that gave them a glimmer of hope of finishing in the play-offs at one stage.

Ipswich did build up from the back a little more patiently under McKenna than they did under Cook, and improved drastically after settling on a three at the back formation, and Jackson operating as a focal point, with some exciting more mobile forwards around him, was working a treat before the injury.

Pigott, John-Jules and Ladapo are all more exciting names that neutral supporters will be familiar with in the third tier, but Jackson's role bringing other players into play looks likely to make him the club's first choice number nine at this stage.
