Karl Robinson speaks out on the future of 28-year-old at Oxford United

Karl Robinson has a number of players who will be out of contract at the end of the campaign – and the boss has revealed to the Oxford Mail that he will be opening talks with several of them to ensure their future is with the club.

The boss has managed to lead his side towards the play-offs again, with the side currently sat in sixth place and well amongst the contenders for a potential promotion push.

As the winter window prepares to open, Robinson will no doubt want to tie up the future of some of his more important players whose deals are set to expire to help keep away any interested parties. One such player who the manager seems keen to keep at the club is Alex Gorrin, who he has confirmed will be offered fresh terms.

Quiz: Have Oxford United signed a player from each of these 20 clubs in the last 5 seasons?

Preston North End

He is the only player who has been named by the boss in terms of who will definitely offered a new deal – and it no doubt comes due to the fact the player has been superb for the side since his move to the EFL.

This year, he has managed 13 games in total and has been a mainstay in the side yet again. The only thing that has curtailed his progress this season is an injury which has seen him sat on the sidelines since October.

Even though the player might not feature too much again this campaign, it doesn’t mean that Oxford will allow the 28-year-old to exit the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season. The midfielder has racked up over 100 appearances and is still important to Robinson and that means that he is no doubt keen to ensure that upon his return to match fitness, he will be at Oxford.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail about it, the boss said: “We’re speaking a lot about who we want to look for, for next season. Alex will be someone we’ll offer a contract to.

“What he’s given this football club in the last two or three years, he’s somebody I’ve been able to rely on for a long time and he’s someone that means a lot to me.”

That means that, if Gorrin wants to stay of course, then it is likely the player will stay on at the club after this season.

The Verdict

Karl Robinson is doing the right thing by sorting out the players already in his team ahead of the winter window.

The manager is ensuring that some of the most important players that he wants to keep at the side can stay on past the end of the season. It also means that there will be less interest in them when the window opens – and ensures they can focus purely on the players that they want to sign and see playing at Oxford.

It is a smart move and could stand them in good stead for the remainder of the campaign. Gorrin being kept on is another shrewd move too.

The player is injured but that doesn’t mean he isn’t valuable to the League One side. Before he was sidelined, he looked superb and he’s also been a key player for Oxford since his move – and that is likely to stay the same once he returns to match fitness.
