Charlton Athletic suffered a disappointing home defeat to Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy last minute, with the loss compounded by the early loss of winger Tariqe Fosu to injury.

The midfielder has impressed for the Addicks since signing from Reading in the summer, scoring seven goals in just fifteen Championship appearances this season.

The player came off in the ninth minute after complaints of a tight thigh muscle, with manager Karl Robinson willing to take no chances with his star midfielder man.

Robinson provided a clear update on Fosu's knock in an interview with the club's official site, stating: “He had a tight thigh that went and stiffened up on him after a few minutes.”

“I wasn’t going to take any chance so took him off immediately.

“I’d be surprised if he’s not available to face MK Dons (at the weekend).”

The Verdict

News of Fosu’s injury will come as a huge relief to Charlton fans, with fears in the stands that Fosu’s injury could potentially have been much worse than it was.

There is no point risking any player during the Checkatrade Trophy and Robinson intelligently removed Fosu from proceedings as a precautionary measure, and fans will be happy to hear Robinson state that he should be available for the weekend.

Charlton are in excellent league form, with Fosu central to their success, and having him fit and healthy ahead of the huge clash with Robinson’s former side at the weekend is excellent news for all associated with the club.
