Nottingham Forest's pre-season schedule got underway in earnest last night as they faced Gibraltarian side Lincoln Red Imps in Marbella.

The Reds have been very aggressive in their recruitment this summer and you'd expect them to be firmly in the promotion race this coming campaign.

Things proved positive last night, too, as they beat their opposition 5-0 with a number of the goals coming from academy products.

Certainly, that is promising for the club despite the obvious outlay on senior players and it might just give Aitor Karanka something to think about once the season is underway.

Surely, they won't be guaranteed starts given Forest's signings but the Spaniard has not ruled out using them if and when needed.

As quoted by the Nottingham Post he said:

“I do not know if they can play a part next season. But we have 46 games to play and we will see. They are improving with us and they feel that they can play – and the more options we have, the better we will be.”

The Verdict

Forest's U23 side was certainly strong last season and there's a good number of young players that should be knocking on the door of the senior side.

With the new arrivals coming in, though, there could be a bit of a bottleneck and so it's going to be interesting to see how Karanka manages the players at his disposal.

Certainly, though, it's a problem you would rather have at your club than not.
