Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips has made it clear that promotion is a must after he committed his long-term future to the Whites earlier this week.

There had been speculation surrounding the defensive midfielder all summer after his performances in the previous campaign, however the academy graduate remained a Leeds player after the transfer deadline had passed.

And, the Yorkshire outfit confirmed on Monday that they had agreed a new five-year deal with Phillips as a reward for his loyalty and form.

The 23-year-old will now be able to focus totally on his football and he told the club's official site that it's about ensuring he is lining up for Leeds in the top-flight next season.

"This season we’ve got to get back in the Premier League and with the team and manager we have got, it would be a big opportunity wasted if we don’t get promoted.

"We’ve got to push and push for promotion, we came so close last year and I think it has done the team good because we know what it takes and how much hard work it takes to get there."

The verdict

This is the sort of message that the fans will love as Phillips is making it clear that they simply have to go up.

Of course, that was the expectancy anyway, but it's good for the fans to hear a player speak in such a clear and honest way, instead of playing things down.

Phillips will be a big part of that promotion push as he is a crucial player under Bielsa and has emerged as a leader in this team.
