Kalvin Phillips has sent a defiant personal message to Leeds United fans after he signed a new long-term deal with his boyhood club, saying he is determined to ensure the Whites are promoted.

The midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Elland Road, putting an end to speculation of his departure that engulfed the club in the summer, and he is clearly more than happy to be staying.

Writing on Instagram, alongside a series of photographs from the signing, Phillips said: "Proud moment for me and my family! ❤️ Thank you to @leedsunited and a special thank you to @martin.bradley75 & @keats29 and all my family & friends for supporting me ❤️. Now time to get this club back where it belongs! 💛💙"

During the summer, Phillips was linked with moves to Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers after they failed to win promotion following a heartbreaking end to the season.

It was a season that saw the 23-year-old become a central figure to Marcelo Bielsa's revolution, playing in 42 of their 46 league games and both of the play-off ties with Derby County.

Whilst the deal is undoubtedly good news for the club, a report from Football Insider did reveal that there is a release clause in the player's contract, leaving the option for Phillips to leave next summer.

The verdict

It is really easy to see why Leeds fans adore Phillips so much, isn't it?

It is also easy to see why fans often get so annoyed when their clubs put very little time or effort into their youth system, because when you produce a player like this who knows and loves the club so well, it really does help.

Phillips will be determined to get the Whites promoted, far more than anyone else in the team I suspect, and as a fan you cannot ask for much more.
