Kalvin Phillips has admitted that people’s dislike for Leeds United is motivating the side to prove that they are the best in the Sky Bet Championship.

Leeds find themselves in the thick of a promotion race this season, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side impressing with their slick brand of attacking football.

On Saturday the Whites picked up another important point at Middlesbrough, with Phillips’ goal in the 11th minute of added time rescuing a result.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the 23-year-old highlighted Leeds’ motivation: “You want to prove a lot of people wrong.

“There's a lot of stuff said and obviously people don't like us but it kind of motivates us to basically make a point to people and say we’re the best team in the league.

“You want to be top and be the best team in the league and with the way we’ve been playing, I think we are the best team in this league. We’ve just had a few bad results recently.”

The midfielder returned to his favoured role in defensive midfield on Saturday, but still managed to pop up with his first goal of the season, heading in following Liam Cooper’s effort from an Ezgjan Alioski corner.

A 1-1 draw meant that Leeds avoided a fifth defeat in seven games, with Phillips hoping it sets the Whites up for another run.

“I think this result is a big confidence boost and hopefully we can go on another run now,” Phillips continued.

Now, attention at Leeds turns to Wednesday evening when Swansea City visit Elland Road.

Bielsa’s side drew 2-2 with the Swans earlier in the season, with Phillips substituted after just 28 minutes on the day.

The Verdict

It’s good to see that Leeds are using criticism to motivate them, it’s how it should be.

Over the course of the season they’ve been very good and up there with the best in the division, so it’s clearly working.

For Phillips, he will realise the importance of Saturday’s goal and how it could affect the rest of the season.
