Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has congratulated former teammate and Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt on winning promotion to the Championship.

Sunderland and Portsmouth both lost last night, meaning that Barnsley and Luton Town are promoted to the second tier.

Mowatt posted this message on his personal Instagram account last night and his former Leeds teammate Phillips was one of the first to comment on the post to give his congratulations, writing: "Congrats al."

Mowatt came through the academy at Leeds and scored twelve goals in 116 appearances for the Whites, before joining Barnsley in 2017.

The 24-year-old has had an outstanding season for Barnsley, scoring six goals and providing eight assists for his teammates in 50 appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Phillips has also had a superb season for Leeds in the Championship, after being transformed into a defensive midfielder under the guidance of head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Both players were named in the EFL Team of the Season for their respective leagues.

Barnsley are currently second in the League One table, level on points with leaders Luton and will have a chance to clinch the title when they face Bristol Rovers on the final day of the season.

The Verdict

It's nice to see Phillips send his congratulations to Mowatt after Barnsley's promotion to the Championship.

It's been over two years since Mowatt left Leeds, but Phillips clearly still has a good relationship with his former teammate.

Phillips may come up against his former teammate in the Championship next season, although the Leeds midfielder will be hoping this is not the case, as the Whites prepare for the play-offs.
