Midfielder Kalvin Phillips and former striker Kemar Roofe are among the familiar Leeds United players to send messages to Liam Cooper on his birthday.

The Whites captain turned 28 on Thursday and, as a result, was inundated with public messages from his teammates in what has been a special week for the defender.

Both Phillips and Roofe sent their messages through Instagram.

First, Phillips shared a photograph on his story of the two of them, along with the caption: "Happy birthday to one of the best!"

Roofe took a slightly more typical approach, writing on his own story: "Happy birthday, big man" along with a photograph of the pair at Elland Road.

Earlier this week Cooper was informed that he had been called up to the Scottish national side for the first time in his career, an accolade that many fans felt was long overdue.

But there will not be much time for celebration tonight for Cooper with a stern test awaiting them on Saturday when Swansea City come to visit.

The Swans are level on points with Leeds at the top of the table and only sit one play behind them on goal difference.

The verdict

It is clear just how popular Cooper must be with his teammates which is exactly what you want from your club captain.

His Scotland call-up was incredibly deserved and it is hard not to be delighted for him in what has surely been quite a special week.

However, you can bet that week will be ruined if Leeds fail to pick-up all three points at Elland Road on Saturday.
