‘Justice will prevail’ – Chuks Aneke reacts following Charlton Athletic success v Wigan

Charlton Athletic will have been glad to get away from The Valley yesterday, after a torrid run of form has seen them not win on home soil since December.

Away from home though is a different story, with the Addicks having far more success on the road, and that proved to be the case once again as they travelled north to struggling Wigan Athletic.

It wasn’t a pretty affair, with both sides having a lot of chances, but Lee Bowyer’s outfit scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

Racing on to a Conor Washington flick-on, Chuks Aneke weaved his way through the Latics backline and powerfully slotted home for his 13th goal of the season.

That goal proved vital as the Addicks and Wigan both spurned numerous chances throughout the game, and it proved to be the peak of a good few days for Aneke.

The former Arsenal man was sent off against Blackpool at the weekend for alleged violent conduct in an aerial challenge with Daniel Ballard, and Aneke was facing a four-match ban due to it being his second sending off of the season.

That red card was overturned though on appeal, leaving the 27-year-old free to start last night – and he proved to be the difference maker.

There was a sense of relief from Aneke as he took to social media to celebrate the victory and his goal – and what he believed to be ‘justice’ in the form of his red card being wiped out.

“Justice will prevail ✊🏾,” Aneke posted.

“Great performance from the boys, to a man, unreal shift.”

The Verdict

Aneke was clearly wronged against Blackpool, so for him to win his appeal and come back into the team and score the winner really is just desserts.

He hasn’t always been a prolific scorer – the current campaign is just his third season where he has hit double figures in the league, but there’s a talent there for sure.

Aneke is Charlton’s leading light – now he and the team just need to start doing it at The Valley now and arrest the slide that they’ve had on home soil.
