Birmingham City have joined the race to sign Sammy Ameobi on a free transfer, according to Football Insider.

Ameobi is on the lookout for a new club after being let go by Nottingham Forest at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract.

The 29-year-old scored eight goals and chipped in with 11 assists in a total of 81 games for the Reds, scoring three goals in 32 Championship appearances last season.

Now available to sign on a free transfer, Birmingham are now said to have joined Middlesbrough in the race to sign the towering winger.

Blues have endured a busy start to the summer under Lee Bowyer, bringing in Chuks Aneke, Ryan Woods and Jordan Graham on free transfers.

Ameobi, then, would fit the bill, with the winger available to sign for nothing and potentially becoming Blues’ fourth addition of the summer.

Ameobi was influential for Forest in 2019/20, scoring five goals and registering nine assists as the Reds narrowly missed out on a play-off finish.
