Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson is taking steps to bolster his squad with a move to sign Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty on loan, as reported by STV Sport.

The Black Cats have reportedly made an approach to bring the 23-year-old international to Wearside on loan for the remainder of the season, although Championship side Charlton Athletic have also expressed an interest.

Sunderland's League One rivals Peterborough United have been long-term admirers of Docherty but he turned down a move to London Road last summer, and has also rebuffed their attempts to sign him on loan this month.

So would Docherty be a good addition at the Stadium of Light, is he needed and would he start for the Black Cats?

We discuss........

Phil Spencer

“This could be just what the doctor ordered for Sunderland.

“The Black Cats are lacking quality in the middle of the park with Max Power and George Dobson being the only truly trusted players in central midfield.

“Despite being just 23 years of age, Docherty has a decent amount of experience with both Hamilton Academical and Shrewsbury Town where he spent the duration of last term.

“The midfielder was really impressive during that time and it’s thought that Rangers rate him highly despite only making a handful of appearances.

“Docherty’s knowledge of League One and his experience playing for a big club could make him the ideal addition for Phil Parkinson and this is one that supporters should be very happy about.”

Ned Holmes

"This looks an interesting one.

"Docherty spent last season on loan with Shrewsbury, amassing 50 appearances, so he certainly knows League One.

"He was really impressive for the Shrews, grabbing 10 goals and 11 assists, but has had few opportunities at Rangers, so a move may appeal to him.

"It looks a smart move from Parkinson to try and strengthen in the centre of the park. Dylan McGeouch has left the club and Grant Leadbitter has often looked off the pace.

"I'm not sure if he displaces Max Power or George Dobson, particularly given the Black Cats recent form, but it would certainly give them more options.

"Sunderland are on the up but promotion is still going to be a tough task, they need all the squad depth they can get."

Ben Lang

"This would be a great signing for Sunderland and I think there is every chance he could break into the club's midfield, particularly given he can add a serious goal threat to the side.

"Docherty impressed during his loan stint at Shrewsbury last campaign, and while he has found opportunities hard to come by at Rangers this term, there can be no doubting that he is a player who will give everything for the team.

"The 23-year-old will add real energy to the Black Cats' midfield, and the club will certainly benefit from increased depth in this area during their play-off push in the remainder of the campaign.

"I think Phil Parkinson should look to start Docherty alongside George Dobson in centre-midfield, but the presence of Max Power also adds another option and this competition can only be a good thing."
