Bournemouth have made bid worth over £2million for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell, TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has claimed.

Rothwell has been in outstanding form for Blackburn so far this season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists to help Tony Mowbray's side to second in the current Championship standings.

That has now started to attract interest from elsewhere, with this latest update claiming that Bournemouth have made their move in an attempt to sign Rothwell from their promotion rivals.

Subsequent reports from the Lancashire Telegraph have revealed that Rovers have rejected three bids from Bournemouth this month for the midfielder, who is out of contract at Ewood Park in the summer.

But would Rothwell be a good signing for Bournemouth, if they did manage to bring him to The Vitality Stadium this month?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their thoughts on this potential move, and here, is a look at what they had to say.

Ned Holmes

This would be a fantastic signing for Bournemouth but I cannot see Blackburn cashing in on him for this sort of fee.
Rothwell has been phenomenal in central midfield for Tony Mowbray's side this season, pulling the strings and dictating play as he's helped them climb into the automatic promotion places.
He may be out of contract in the summer but given Rovers are pushing for automatic promotion this term, it would make no sense for them to sell him to a direct rival unless the fee was a staggering one.
For now, I think this is a non-starter but should the Cherries go up in place of Blackburn in the summer and I could see him making the switch.
No way they sell him for £2m+ in January. If they do, they're mad!

Charlie Gregory

Regardless of whether Bournemouth need someone in Joe Rothwell’s position or not, signing a player like him is never a bad thing.

He might not be a position of imminent need for the Cherries but his ability in dictating the play and contributing effectively at the top end of the field can not be understated. If a cut-price fee can be agreed, then it should definitely be a bit of business they do.

£2m as a price for the player is relatively cheap considering the market. If Scott Parker has that money there to spend, then they could do a lot worse than splashing it on Rothwell.

If Blackburn are willing to accept that fee, then it would be a great move by Bournemouth and would also hinder a promotion rival.

Alfie Burns

Rothwell is having a great season and there’s little surprise to see interest bubbling away in the midfielder whilst his contract runs down.

10 goal contributions make him one of the Championship’s most productive players in his position, and a crucial part of the reason why Blackburn are pushing for promotion.

You can see why Bournemouth want him to give them an edge over Blackburn in the race for the top-two.

However, because this is a saga involving two direct rivals in the division, £2m just isn’t going to cut it.

For Blackburn, they might as well lose Rothwell for less later in the day than sell to a direct rival for promotion.

Premier League football would be worth so much more to the club than a £2m transfer fee, so you’ve got to imagine Blackburn will be quite stubborn with this.

Anything other than a ridiculous bid for the midfielder and he should stay at Ewood Park. That’s the message that Blackburn simply have to give.
