Just 1 goal for Leeds United: Bielsa is right to axe this Victor Orta flop

Plenty of Leeds United’s 2017/18 squad are facing the axe under Marcelo Bielsa, as the club’s new head-coach gets to work ahead of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Leeds’ players are back in training, with Bielsa only working with a small percentage of players left behind by Paul Heckingbottom.

So far, there has been no sign of Caleb Ekuban, who is the latest feature of our FLW Spotlight, as we take a look back at his debut season in the Championship:

The 24-year-old featured on 20 occasions for Leeds in the Championship, but averaged just one shot per game.

That is reflected in his goalscoring tally, with Ekuban only finding the back of the net on one occasion in the league.

Away from a poor goalscoring record, Ekuban’s other work was often praised on the terraces at Elland Road.

He won an average of 1.4 aerial duels per game, as well as averaging 0.7 dribbles per game.

In possession the striker was steady too, averaging a pass success of 72.9%.

The Verdict

Ekuban was brought to Elland Road by Victor Orta, but flopped in the Championship.

One goal in 20 appearances is an abysmal return for a striker, particularly with some of the chances presented to the 24-year-old.

Bielsa hasn’t included Ekuban in his plans for the new season, which is hardly a surprise, given how disappointing he was last year.

Moving the striker on in some capacity this season would 100% be the right call from Bielsa, who will not have been impressed with Ekuban’s performances last season.
