Jude Bellingham reflects on Birmingham City’s nine-goal thriller against Leeds United

Jude Bellingham has sent a message to Birmingham City fans on social media, following the nine-goal thriller against Leeds United yesterday.

The 16-year-old has been one of the standout players for Birmingham in the Championship so far this season and scored his third goal of the campaign yesterday, in an extraordinary game at St Andrew’s.

Birmingham came from behind three times, but ended up with nothing, as Leeds snatched all three points in dramatic circumstances – thanks to a 95th-minute own goal from Blues defender Wes Harding.

Leeds found themselves 2-0 ahead inside the opening 21 minutes, but Bellingham pulled one back for the hosts with his first goal in over three months, shooting low into the corner.

Shortly after Lukas Jutkiewicz had levelled for the Blues, Luke Ayling put Leeds back in front with a superb strike, only for Jeremie Bela to equalise for Birmingham for a second time with a header.

Stuart Dallas thought he’d won it for Leeds in the 84th minute, only for Jutkiewicz to equalise for the Blues again in the 91st minute, before Harding’s own goal won the match for the visitors, to send them to the Championship table.

Following the game, Bellingham took to social media to reflect on the result and sent a message to Birmingham fans with a message on his personal Instagram account.

The midfielder admitted that he felt the result was harsh on the Blues, but that it was nice to get back on the scoresheet. The teenager also thanked the Birmingham fans for their support.

Who did Birmingham beat on Boxing Day last season at St Andrew's?

The Verdict

I’m sure this defeat will be a tough one for the Birmingham players to take, but there are plenty of positives for the team to take away from their performance – they showed great character to come from behind three times.

As for Bellingham, he produced another very promising performance yesterday and took his goal very well. I’m sure it would have been a great feeling for him to get himself back on the scoresheet, after so many games without a goal.
