Sheffield Wednesday can expect to be without Fernando Forestieri after the player was sent off late on in the draw with Rotherham United at the weekend.

The 29-year-old was given a bizarre second yellow after his side scored an injury-time equaliser as he tried to high-five a fan who and encroached onto the pitch as celebrations spilt over.

Journalist Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star is reporting that he is expecting the FA to confirm the length of the attacker’s ban for the unusual dismissal at the hands of referee Darren England.

With the likelihood of it being a one-game ban for picking up a second yellow in the match.

The decision on Forestieri’s ban comes after the Wednesday man was banned for three matches after an investigation into the pre-season fracas at Mansfield Town back in July.

It means the Owls’ attacker is more than likely to miss this weekend’s home game with Swansea City as they look to continue their unbeaten start to life under Steve Bruce at Hillsborough.

The verdict

Second yellow cards cannot be rescinded, but this is totally ridiculous.

All he did was high-five a man after his side scored a last-minute goal.

It’s petulant of the referee to give him a booking for that and something that should be looked at.

Use common sense; it’s not hard – it’s was a puzzling decision.

But if it looks to be a one-game ban, so be it, Wednesday will have to do without him for their next match and regroup from this.
