According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are not interested in signing Alvaro Negredo this summer, despite reports indicating that they were keen to take the striker away from Valencia.

Reports emerged over the weekend that Leeds were prepared to pay £6.4m for Negredo, and were set to rival Swansea City in the race to sign the 31-year-old, who spent last season on-loan with Middlesbrough.

When asked about those reports, Lee Sobot, a reliable journalist from the YEP, insisted that Leeds had not indicated they were interested in signing Negredo, with that unlikely to change between now and the end of the summer.

Sobot believes that Negredo’s wage demands would be too much for Leeds, insisting his arrival would “blow the wage structure apart.”

Despite it looking unlikely that Negredo will be on his way to Elland Road, Leeds are in the market looking for fresh striking options ahead of the new season.

Last season, Chris Wood scored 30 goals for the Whites, but the rest of the squad struggled to support the New Zealand international, with Leeds’ next highest goalscorer finding the net on just six occasions.

Leeds are also looking to add a couple of defenders to their squad, with central defence and left-back an area of concern for Thomas Christiansen.

However, Leeds and Christiansen are remaining tight-lipped on who their transfer targets are.

The Verdict

Reports linking Leeds and Negredo came as a surprise, particularly the multi-million-pound transfer-fee.

Leeds already have Chris Wood on their books, and despite Christiansen hunting for a new striker, it is likely that whoever arrives will play second fiddle to last season’s 30-goal hero.

The reported fee the club were willing to pay for Negredo will encourage Leeds fans, but it is likely that they would rather see that money spent on a central defender to replace Kyle Bartley, who has returned to Swansea City.
