Reliable journalist Tim Nash has revealed that Wolverhampton Wanderers made a late attempt to sign Chris Martin and Loic Remy on transfer deadline day.

Nuno Espirito Santo is currently regretting his decision to let Nouha Dicko leave Molineux earlier this week, as Wolves have only Leo Bonatini as a recognised striking option following the close of the transfer window.

Nash has revealed that as Thursday night’s deadline edged closer, Wolves made a desperate attempt to sign Martin from Derby County, but the Rams rejected the advance of their Sky Bet Championship rivals.

Wolves also made a move to sign Remy, who had been released from his contract with Chelsea, and the French striker was keen on a move to Molineux, but had already made a commitment to joining Las Palmas.

Bonatini will now continue as Wolves’ focal point in attack after the international break following Nuno’s failure to recruit any competition for the young Brazilian.

However, Nash has also indicated that Nuno will still look to bring a striker to Molineux between now and the January transfer window, despite clubs unable to make loan signings.

Wolves are understood to be looking at free agents they could possibly bring in over the coming weeks.

The Verdict

Wolves had an excellent summer transfer window, there is no denying that, with Nuno transforming a mid-table squad into one of the Championship’s most feared, which should be challenging for promotion next year.

However, failure to sign a striker ended the summer window on a sour note, but there is still a feeling that Wolves have enough about them to compete with just Bonatini.

Signing either Martin or Remy would have been fantastic for Wolves, but the club will have been cautious about the risk of panic buying a striker.
