Aston Villa are set to save around £13m in wages when they move players on in the summer, with Mile Jedinak one big earner set to leave.

That's according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon who confirmed on twitter that the Australian would be moving on when his contract expires in the coming months.

As well as that, he suggested that Glenn Whelan, Micah Richards and Albert Adomah could all depart as Dean Smith looks to cut costs.

Whilst that won't be a shock to many, the fact Nixon estimates it will save around £13m highlights just how much Villa are currently spending on players, even though many of them are struggling to make a positive impact.

Reducing the wage bill will be a priority for Villa in the summer as they look to avoid any financial fair play sanctions.

Local rivals Birmingham were hit with a nine-point deduction for breaking the rules and the Daily Mail reported that Villa were one of three clubs who could be next.

However, key figures at the West Midlands outfit have always been confident that wouldn't be the case although it's clear serious action will need to be taken.

The Verdict

Obviously this is good news for Villa on the whole but it must anger fans that they are spending so much on players who just aren't contributing.

But, that's down to the previous owner and manager and there's not much the current setup can do.

Regardless of whether Villa win promotion it's going to be a summer of change for the club and it's much-needed.
