According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay, Leeds United are edging closer to signing a central defender, but the journalist revealed the club were keeping his name under wraps.

The Whites are in desperate need for defensive reinforcements, as Kyle Bartley’s return to Swansea City at the end of last season and Giuseppe Bellusci’s imminent departure have left Thomas Christiansen short of options.

Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are Leeds’ only senior options in central defence, with Luke Ayling and 21-year-old, Conor Shaughnessy, providing cover during pre-season.

Leeds have been active in the transfer window so far, bringing in a number of players from abroad. However, a report in the YEP suggests that the Elland Road club are looking to the domestic market as they step up their search for new defensive options.

Andrea Radrizzani, Leeds’ owner, has gone about his business quietly this summer, particularly when appointing head-coach, Christiansen, whose arrival came as a surprise to most.

Leeds appear to be taking a similar approach in their quest to sign defenders, with names not given to the media at this moment in time.

Christiansen and Leeds are currently in Austria preparing for the 2017/18 Championship campaign, which begins on August 6th, when the Whites travel to Bolton Wanderers.
