Journalist reveals latest outlook on Wigan striker search

Wigan Athletic are likely to try and add a fresh striker to their ranks this month – but The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has revealed there is no deal close yet.

The Latics are currently unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions and with four games in hand, are only five points off the top spot.

Leam Richardson has done an incredible job at the DW Stadium so far and has compiled a squad that is well capable of competing at the top of the League One table. While Will Keane has topped the goalscoring charts with ten for them so far this season, one of their main strikers in terms of goals has been Charlie Wyke.

Quiz: Have Wigan Athletic signed a player from each of these 20 clubs in the last 5 seasons?

Wyke though is currently out of action and means they could do with an extra option in attack. It’s likely to be a focus for the club so far this window – but Alan Nixon has revealed that while there are ‘options’ there is nothing set to be completed for them yet.

It means that, for now, the club will likely have to make do with what they have got. There is plenty time for them to bring in a fresh face in attack and it certainly seems like they are keeping their options open. However, with no deal close, that means they will have to continue using the likes of Callum Lang and Keane in that forward role.

Wigan have a newfound wealth since being taken over and could quite easily splash the cash on the right target. Right now though, it looks like they are in the process of merely identifying targets rather than making moves for them.

The Verdict

Leam Richardson has certainly done all the right things and made all the right moves so far as the Wigan boss.

Since taking the reigns, he has led the club to League One safety and now has them competing at the opposite end of the division and dreaming of a place in the Championship again. He’s made the team play cohesively and pick up some solid results and it looks like they are genuine promotion contenders.

The boss has already put together a strong unit – and adding a striker is the right move, as it is an area they are quite light on right now. If they can find the right target, it could really take them up a gear too in the second half of the campaign.

Latics fans will be pleased to hear that they are considering some targets upfront but they’ll be hoping some actual moves and bids can be launched soon.
