Stoke City sacked manager Gary Rowett this morning after the club's tough season so far, however David Moyes has not yet been approached about taking over.

That's the latest according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon who revealed that there had been no contact with the former Manchester United boss who had emerged as the early favourite to replace Rowett.

Instead, Nixon claims that the Potters have been sounding out potential candidate, which included meeting someone last night who could be considered 'left field' for the vacant job.

Rowett was sacked after under eight months in charge of Stoke in which he had a very tough time.

A very productive summer, that saw big-money arrivals such as Tom Ince and Benik Afobe, combined with the club retaining star duo Joe Allen and Jack Butland, meant they started the season as favourites.

However, the ex-Derby boss leaves the Staffordshire outfit in 14th place and eight points behind the play-off places.

Should Moyes become a contender for the job, it would be hist first job since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

The Verdict

This is a crucial appointment for Stoke and one that they have to get right.

The financial implications of failing to win promotion this season means that there will be a huge turnover of players in the summer.

So, Moyes might be a good option but there are plenty of others who deserve consideration but ultimately it's about getting the right man to ensure this season can still be a successful one.
