Sheffield Wednesday are on the lookout for Garry Monk's successor after his departure from Hillsborough earlier this week.

A statement confirming Monk's exit came on Monday evening, with Dejphon Chansiri opting for a change after a tough 2020.

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy at Hillsborough, including the experienced Tony Pulis whose last job came in the Championship with Middlesbrough, who he led into the play-offs and then to seventh.

However, reliable journalist Alan Nixon has been discussing the possibility of Wednesday landing Pulis, describing any appointment as 'difficult' and pointing to the expense of getting the 62-year-old on board.

Pulis, of course, was the man to take Stoke City to the Premier League over a decade ago and he initially helped the Potters establish themselves in the top-flight. He's also managed West Brom and Crystal Palace at English football's top table, before stepping back into management with Boro in 2017/18.

He led the Teessiders into the play-offs that season after taking over from Monk at the Riverside Stadium. The following season Boro missed out on the play-offs to Derby County on the final day of the season.

The Verdict

It's an interesting thing to consider here. Monk will have had compensation and Chansiri will be mindful of how expensive recruiting his successor is.

Pulis would be a good option given his experience, but he's something of a short-term fix. That proved to be the case at Boro and the situation at Wednesday has strangely developed into what we saw at the Riverside Stadium.

I've little doubt that Pulis would have success, but given the finances potentially involved, is it the right call?

I'm not convinced.
