Journalist Alan Nixon has offered an interesting update on Reading's transfer plans over the next week, tweeting that they are looking at bringing in a new face.

Nixon, a thoroughly reliable and trusted source, has revealed that they're in the market for a midfield playmaker, but that the deal may not get done ahead of their season-opener against Derby County.

Instead, any deal will be completed next week and there is likely to be more news after the big kick off, possibly by Sunday morning.

Reading have had a decent summer in the transfer market, the big money buy being Coventry City striker Marc McNulty, who arrived for a fee of thought to be in excess of £1m.

They also added Barnsley full back Andy Yiadom, a one-time target for Leeds and West Brom, as well as experienced midfielder David Meyler from Hull City and Premier League forward Sam Baldock.

They kick off the new season tomorrow night as they host Frank Lampard's Derby County at the Madejski Stadium.

The Verdict

With Paul Clement at the helm, Reading have a chance of springing a surprise this season, especially if they can find a way of ensuring Marc McNulty's League Two form can be carried over into the Championship.

The dynamic between him and Baldock will be crucial, but it will be helped immensely by the capture of a talented play maker, whoever that may be.
