Teams in the English Football League are set to vote on whether they want to finish the remainder of the season.

News broke earlier in the week that promotion and relegation within the Football League will remain if the majority of clubs vote to end the season.

Many fans allege that the vote will - or already has - happened this weekend, as teams in the EFL prepare to resume training next week.

Journalist Alan Nixon shared his thoughts on how the vote might've panned out:

The overriding feeling has been that both the Premier League and Championship seasons need to be played out, but some teams are still in disagreement over the matter.

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has been an active advocate of finishing the season as it is, and with no relegation or promotion, whilst Leeds and West Brom could pursue legal action if their promotion hopes are squashed.

With the season resume planned for June, the nearer we get to next month without a concrete answer, the more confusion that arises.

But with the all-important 'vote' happening in the background, we should next week have the answers we've been waiting over two months for.

The verdict

Promotion and relegation is just the start of the debate for the EFL and its 72 competitors. As Nixon pointed out, money garnered from TV rights could yet have to be paid back by teams, and that itself presents a whole new case.

This coming week should be a big one in terms of the EFL season. With training set to restart we should be in-line to find out how, or if the season will finish, but after an already arduous debate, many fans won't be counting on breaking news from the EFL anytime soon.
