Journalist makes prediction on Djed Spence saga amid Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest interest

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor believes Tottenham Hotspur will launch a £20m bid for Djed Spence’s services following his game against Slovenia last night, making this prediction to Give Me Sport.

The 21-year-old has been the subject of interest from several top-flight sides in recent months including Arsenal, Manchester City and former Champions League winners Bayern Munich.

Tottenham Hotspur are the side that are thought to be leading the race for his signature at this stage despite still being tracked by former loan club Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed great success during the 2021/22 campaign.

When were the club founded?

It has even been reported that the England youth international would prefer a move to Antonio Conte’s side, although they are not yet thought to be closing in on signing the Middlesbrough star despite previous reports.

In fact, the two clubs are yet to strike an agreement for his services and this could enable Forest to force their way back into the race with Steve Cooper’s side having an increased amount of funds to spend following their promotion to the Premier League.

However, reporter Taylor believes an imminent move from their top-tier rivals in north London may be on the horizon with Conte desperate to get this deal over the line.

He said: “My view is that once the final England Under-21s game is out of the way tonight (last night), Spurs will offer £20m.

“I reported just over a week ago, the previous Sunday, that Spurs were going to push ahead with it.

“That was the information that I had received, that he was one of the names Tottenham were looking at.”

The Verdict:

£20m would be a sizeable offer but it’s a fee Spurs will be able to spend and it may be worth it for the long term considering Spence is only 21 and could be a great option to have on the right for years to come.

His valuation may skyrocket if he can continue developing like he did last season and it wouldn’t be impossible to see him come in as a starter, so £20m may actually turn out to be a reasonably cheap fee for them.

And if Conte wants to switch to a back three, the 21-year-old may not be needed as much defensively, enabling him to push forward like he did for Forest throughout the last campaign.

Not only was Spence impressive against second-tier sides – but also the likes of Arsenal and Leicester City in the FA Cup earlier on this calendar year so the north London outfit will be hoping that he can adapt to the challenge of the top flight seamlessly.

There will be high expectations of him though, so Spurs should be patient if they manage to win the race for his signature and may even benefit from easing him in at first before seeing him become one of the first names on the teamsheet.
