Sunderland will not benefit from the presence of new striker Will Grigg this weekend as he won't be at the club today and therefore most likely won't be in the squad for tomorrow's match against AFC Wimbledon.

Journalist James Hunter tweeted that the Black Cats' top transfer target is not going to join in with training, which is little surprise as he picked up an injury at the weekend with Wigan and is currently out of action for a week or two.

Sunderland's pursuit of Grigg lasted for most of the transfer window, but they finally landed their man during the dying embers of deadline day.

The Northern Ireland international is still waiting for approval, as revealed by manager Jack Ross, but it certainly looks as though he'll be the Josh Maja replacement as they hunt a spot in the Championship.

The 27-year-old scored 26 goals in 53 outings for Wigan as they won the League One title last season, with 19 of those strikes coming in league action.

The Verdict

This looked likely to be the deal that never got over the line, but at the eleventh hour Sunderland got their man. It's a marked difference to the final hours of last years window, where they lost out on a deal for Ross McCormack.

It's a huge coup for Jack Ross and his side, Grigg is an experienced and able centre forward will will certainly add depth and value to an already talented squad.
