Sunderland's reported pursuit of Celtic winger Scott Sinclair appears to be all but over, according to Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie.

It had previously been reported by Football Insider that Sunderland were preparing a bid for the Celtic winger, who has struggled for game time under Neil Lennon this season.

Sinclair has made just one league appearances for the Bhoys this season, so it's clear to see that he isn't in Lennon's plans for this year's league campaign.

The report from Football Insider claimed that Sinclair was also attracting interest from a number of European clubs on Deadline Day, although it remains to be seen as to which clubs have registered their interest in signing the former Manchester City man.

Jack Ross is clearly keen to add to his squad on Deadline Day, as they look to go one better than last season, after a defeat to Charlton Athletic in the League One play-off final at Wembley earlier this year.

It remains to be seen as to whether Sunderland will reignite their interest in Sinclair, although it seems difficult to see the Black Cats making a move for the winger whilst his wages remain a stumbling block.

The Verdict:

This will be a frustrating update for Sunderland supporters.

Sinclair surely won't be content with his current game time with Celtic, and I think he could have been tempted by a move to Sunderland today.

But Sunderland can't afford to chase this deal any further, and must turn their attention to alternative targets before the transfer window closes.

They need strength in depth as soon as possible to help aid their promotion bid this term.
