Sheffield United have recently been credited with interest in signing Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane, according to The Athletic.
West Brom are also rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign the Irish international, who has found regular game time with Dean Smith’s side hard to come by in recent seasons.
Hourihane spent the second-half of the 2020/21 season on loan with Swansea City, and made a positive impact with Steve Cooper’s side, although his efforts weren’t quite enough, as they missed out on promotion into the Premier League, after. defeat t Brentford in the play-off final.
Some of the Bramall Lane faithful might have felt as though Hourihane’s rumoured arrival could have meant that Berge was heading for the exit door sooner rather than later.
In a recent report from The Star’s James Shield, it has been revealed that the Blades’ interest in signing Hourihane isn’t dependent on whether Sander Berge was to depart this summer.
“Sheffield United’s interest in Conor Hourihane, the Aston Villa midfielder, is not dependent upon Sander Berge leaving Bramall Lane.”
Sheffield United are set to host Birmingham City in their opening game of the 2021/22 season, in what could potentially be a tricky test up against a Blues side that have been busy in the transfer window.
Can you score full marks on this quiz about some of Sheffield United's biggest moments?
This will be pleasing to hear for the Bramall Lane faithful.
Hourihane has shown that he can perform to a high standard in the Championship in the past, having caught the eye with some strong performances for both Swansea City and Aston Villa at this level.
Berge has been equally as impressive for Sheffield United though, and the club’s supporters will be hoping that he can stick around ahead of their push for promotion back into the Premier League this term.
The prospect of having both Berge and Hourihane in the same midfield could be a frightening prospect for Championship opposition this season.
