Sunderland today confirmed that they had given defender Papy Djilobodji notice about terminating his contract as they look to move the player on.

The former Chelsea man failed to turn up at the club throughout pre-season as he looked to leave following back-to-back relegations.

However, he failed to finalise a deal away from the Stadium of Light before the transfer deadline.

Since then, he has spoken to key figures at the club but Stewart Donald revealed that Djilobodji said he would 'never be seen in Sunderland again'.

Following that, the club, who haven't been paying the 29-year old, announced their intention to terminate his contract but that might not be the end of the matter.

Chronicle reporter James Hunter revealed that the Wearside club could still go through the courts to try and get money that they would've received as a transfer fee for the Senegal international.

Although, Djolobodji could still challenge Sunderland for the wages that he hasn't been paid over the past few months.

He played just 22 games since joining in 2016.

The Verdict

This could run for a while and it's a mess for Sunderland but you have to feel sorry for them in this instance.

Djilobodji has behaved digracefully by not turning up for training for so long and the club had little choice but to terminate his deal.

They will hope any legal action comes in favour of the club but it's going to be a long process and they will be glad to concentrate on the football again this weekend.
