Dom Howson, the Sheffield Star’s sports journalist, has revealed on Twitter that he has been told that Derby do not have the option to sign Sam Winnall on a permanent basis from Sheffield Wednesday.

Winnall joined Derby on deadline day on a season-long loan deal that saw Derby midfielder Jacob Butterfield go the other way and join Sheffield Wednesday for the season.

The 26-year-old’s departure saw much confusion and anger from Wednesday’s fans with many believing he had a big role to play in the upcoming season.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal recently revealed that it wasn’t the club choosing to let Winnall go, but the fact that Derby requested him that pushed the move through.

The Owls in desperate need of a midfielder meant their hands were tied in terms of giving Derby the player they wanted.

The Verdict

It’s definitely a good thing that Derby don’t have the option to buy Sam Winnall.

Despite a slow start to his career at Hillsborough Winnall is a good quality striker and a player that will bring goals at this level.

14 goals in 36 games last season saw a return of nearly a goal every two games and if Winnall had been able to replicate his Barnsley form after his move to Sheffield then the return would have been a lot better.
