Leeds United got their first win of 2018 on Saturday against Brentford and that 1-0 win at Elland Road moved them to within just five points of the final play-off spot.

The form of the top five teams - Wolves, Cardiff City, Aston Villa, Derby County and Fulham - means it looks like there will be just the one play-off spot up for grabs between now and the end of the season.

The patchy form of the teams involved in that race - Bristol City, Sheffield United, Preston, Middlesbrough, Brentford and Leeds - means that it will be a tight contest between now and May.

The view of Yorkshire Post journalist Phil Hay is that the fight for that top six place is hotting up and the tension is beginning to show.

He has called on Leeds to take advantage of that uncertainty and put themselves in the driving seat for the top six - something that looked out of reach not so long ago.

The Verdict

If you'd asked me last week, I'd have said Leeds' play-off push was dead in the water.

However, their win over a top six rival in Brentford has lifted the mood and results have conspired to leave them within striking distance of the play-offs.

Nobody in the chasing pack is playing so well that Leeds should have any fear and that is something for Hecky to aim for between now and the end of the season.
