Journalist Andy Giddings has offered an update on the injury situation of 32-year old Jake Wright, the Sheffield United defender who hasn't featured since April.

The former Oxford man was last seen against Middlesbrough at the end of last season, coming off after 73 minutes. It was his 22nd game of the campaign, but he's since been ruled out as Chris Wilder's side look to involve themselves in the play off race.

The left-footed centre back is now on the recovery trail, with Giddings reporting that he's back on grass, but will spend time with the Under-23 side before progressing to first team action.

In his absence the Blades defence has looked extremely solid, with Jack O'Connell the left-sided defender in the bank of three. It will still be a huge boost to get Wright back to full fitness, although he has just 10 appearances to his name at Championship level.

The bulk of his football came with Oxford United in League Two, where he played 242 times after leaving Brighton. He helped them to the Conference Premier play-off victory in 2010, before finishing runner up in League Two in 2016.

The Verdict

I'm not sure how much Wright will play when he's back. Sheffield United have upped the ante a little and are currently fourth, a position Wright has never found himself in. With just 46 of his 466 senior appearances coming in outside of the bottom two divisions, he doesn't look to be a first team player.

He'll add valuable cover though and doubtless get a run out in cup games which will all help Chris Wilder's cause.
