Barnsley have been given a boost in their quest to find a new manager, with Swansea U23 coach Cameron Toshack and St Mirren boss Jack Ross both being given permission to speak with the club over the vacant role.

The Tykes have been without leadership since Paul Heckingbottom departed for Leeds United last week, but journalist Alan Nixon reports on Twitter that talks will take place with both Toshack and Ross in the coming hours.

Toshack, the son of former Swansea City, Real Madrid and Wales boss John, is held in high regard at The Liberty Stadium, but the club have granted the 47-year-old permission to discuss a deal with the South Yorkshire side.

St Mirren manager Ross has performed wonders at St Mirren Park this season, leading the Scottish minnows to a comfortable fourteen point gap at the summit of the Scottish Championship table.

Nixon reports that talks with Ross are set to take place today.

The Verdict

Barnsley need to appoint a new manager very soon if the new man is to settle and begin to guide the Tykes away from the drop zone, but it appears the club have fluttered between targets for most of the past week.

A decision needs to be made and the right candidate sourced if the club are to avoid relegation to League One in May, with the Oakwell side having fallen into the bottom three in recent weeks.

Both Ross and Toshack are suitable candidates for the role, although some may question their lack of experience at this level.
