On-loan Derby County striker Jack Marriott's Sheffield Wednesday future has been cast into doubt, with Yorkshire Live's Dom Howson suggesting he isn't the sort of forward Tony Pulis is looking for.

The 26-year-old joined on a season-long loan just before the end of the summer transfer window but has not found the net once in his seven appearances for the Owls and is currently sidelined due to injury.

Marriott is expected to be back fit early next year but with Wednesday keen to add to their forward line when the transfer window reopens his future is unclear.

In a Q&A for Yorkshire Live, Howson has thrown the striker's future into doubt and indicated he may not be a player that Pulis is keen on.

He said: "It is interesting one with Marriott. Derby can recall him in January if they wish and it doesn't sound like he's going to be fit until the New Year anyway.

"I think Pulis will be looking to bring in at least one new forward in January, possibly two. I am not sure if Marriott fits the bill for what Pulis is looking for from his strike-force."

Wednesday are second bottom in the Championship as things stand and while a six-point deduction is in part to blame for that, there can be no excuses for how poor they've been in the final third.

Only fellow relegation battlers Wycombe and Derby County have scored fewer than the Owls' seven goals this term, while top scorers Blackburn Rovers have fired in 18 more than them.

Marriott's parent club Derby have got striking issues of their own, so it would be no surprise to see them recall him in January.

The Verdict

The Derby striker looked a shrewd signing for Wednesday just before the summer window closed but it's been a disappointing move for him and the Owls.

Howson is a trusted source when it comes to the Yorkshire club and he seems to be hinting that Marriott's days may well be numbered at Hillsborough.

It's true that the 26-year-old doesn't fit the physical mould of forward that Pulis typically prefers and that could well be his downfall.
