Middlesbrough have not returned to Newcastle United with an improved bid for Karl Darlow, according to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.

Garry Monk’s side saw a £5m bid for Darlow rejected earlier this month, and Ryder has confirmed that Boro have not returned with an improved offer for the goalkeeper since.

Darlow has now resumed training with Newcastle, but it remains unclear whether Boro’s interest in the 26-year-old is over.

Monk is desperate to add a goalkeeper to his squad having lost Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes - last season’s first-choice duo – earlier this summer.

Darlow’s experience of winning promotion from the Sky Bet Championship is what makes him such an attractive option to Boro, who are looking for an instant return to the top-flight.

The goalkeeper made 34 league appearances for the Magpies last season, helping Rafa Benitez’s side win the Championship title and return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Monk’s attentions are currently on strengthening his strikeforce ahead of a push for promotion, and after completing the signing of Martin Braithwaite last week, he is set to sign another of his targets, Britt Assombalonga.

Assombalonga has been on Monk’s radar all summer, and latest reports indicate the striker is due for a medical with Boro ahead of his move.
