The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay has revealed some positive Leeds United injury news, with Gaetano Berardi and Matthew Pennington returning to training.

Thomas Christiansen’s side have returned to training ahead of next week’s return to Sky Bet Championship action, with the majority of Leeds’ squad at Thorp Arch.

Berardi and Pennington were both in attendance, taking part in training and light training respectively, as they edge closer to their return from injury.

Both defenders were forced from the field on the opening day of the Championship season with injury, as Leeds beat Bolton Wanderers 3-2 at the Macron Stadium.

However, the duo are now set to hand Christiansen a huge boost in the coming weeks, as they edge closer to a return to full fitness and into contention.

Berardi and Pennington were joined in training by the majority of Leeds’ first-team squad, along with deadline day arrivals Pawel Cibicki and Pierre-Michel Lasogga – two strikers who were brought in to fill the void left by Chris Wood.

Cibicki and Lasogga could be in contention for their Leeds debut next weekend, when the Whites host Burton Albion at Elland Road, where Christiansen’s side will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the Championship season.

Leeds are currently third with 11 points from their opening five fixtures.

The Verdict

This is a huge boost for Christiansen and Leeds, who will become an even stronger outfit with the return of Berardi and Pennington.

At the start of the season many expected Berardi and Pennington to be involved in the starting XI on a regular basis, but the duo will return with a fight on their hands to get a starting berth back.

Vurnon Anita has been impressive at left-back in Berardi’s absence, whilst Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson have excelled in central defence during Pennington’s spell out.
